Market Update

  • Market steady again as the news remains dominated by the “will they, won’t they” debate over SPR release.
  • Coordinated action for SPR release is expected by the USA, Korea, Japan and India. China also plans to release some of their SPR. It is not clear if India is part of a coordinated effort or not. USA saying they could release up to 35 million barrels over time.
  • Action is being considered as a result of the impact the rise in oil prices this year has had on the economies recovering from the pandemic and the inflationary impact it poses.
  • OPEC+ has retorted by saying it may not increase its production by as much as expected if there is a release of SPR. They maintain that supply tightness will be naturally relieved in the coming months.
